Amateur pianist Lloyd Lim will use Zoom to present two operas: Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana (1890) and Alban Berg’s 12-tone masterpiece Wozzeck (1925), the works for which these two composers are best known.
Before watching each opera, we will discuss its source material. The instructor will provide PDFs of Giovanni Verga’s short story Cavalleria Rusticana and Georg Büchner’s unfinished play Woyzeck (1836), which was based on a true incident.
Each opera is under two hours. We will watch Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Cavalleria Rusticana; you may recognize its famous Intermezzo from the films Raging Bull and The Godfather Part III. For Wozzeck, we will watch a Metropolitan Opera production conducted by James Levine. Prepare yourself for the bleak intensity of modernity!
