Lecture and discussion. The outlook for many types of cancer has changed dramatically. Many different types are no longer untreatable or hopeless. New technologies, drugs, and ideas are rapidly changing how cancer is understood, diagnosed, and treated. Jimmy Carter’s melanoma that had spread to his brain was successfully treated with immunotherapy, which can produce long-term survival. Immunotherapies and targeted therapies have extended remissions for some lung cancer patients from months to years, while new drugs targeting pancreatic cancer are emerging that may offer benefits beyond chemotherapy.
Earlier detection—by months or even years—may make it possible to eliminate some tumors before they grow and spread. Continued progress depends on advancing our understanding of the underlying biology of cancer, evaluating new treatments, and learning how best to use them. Each session will present selected topics for group discussion.
