Learn to play Chinese mahjong variants "Classic" and "Hong Kong" (there are about 40 mahjong versions worldwide). We will review the history of mahjong, etiquette of the game, terminology, the playing piece or tiles (suits, honors, bonus), the mechanics of play, and scoring hands. The mechanics include how to choose seats, how to build the wall, drawing the first hand, structure of a game (4 rounds: East, South, West, North), and rotating the dealer. Students will practice the mechanics by playing games, including taking and discarding tiles, how to develop a winning mahjong hand composed of melds (Chows, Pungs, Kongs, Eye), when to use the Flower Wall, and how to handle Kongs. We’ll review basic scoring, special “limit” hands, and introduce winner payments. By end of class, students are encouraged to join mahjong play around O?ahu to continue to practice the game. Most of all, mahjong is about having fun.
