Time: Hikes begin at 8:00 or 8:30 am and usually end around 2:00 pm.
Locations: Vary and will be provided by the instructor.
Enrollment Limit: 16
Requirements: Participants must be physically fit, experienced hikers able to hike for up to six hours and 4–6 miles over uneven and unimproved terrain. Trails may include extended climbs and descents, narrow ridges with drop-offs, slippery conditions, ropes, and stream crossings over slippery rocks. The group hikes together, and participants must be able to complete the entire hike without turning back early, which may not be possible or allowed. All participants must have completed a 2026 waiver before the first hike.
Participants will experience a range of moderately challenging hikes across a variety of O?ahu locations and landscapes, from well-known public trails to relatively obscure routes. Depending on the group, hikes will average 4–6 miles and may highlight unique native plant habitats, historic features, photography, or crafts such as flower and leaf pressing.

The course goal is to provide stimulating hikes that are both physically challenging and aesthetically fulfilling.  Some hikes will focus on unique native plant habitats, historic features, or craft and artistic pursuits such as flower and leaf pressing or photography. The Advanced Hiking course will be closely coordinated with the Intermediate Hiking course to prevent redundancy.

Keith Mattson is a semi-retired urban planner and avid hiker. A member of the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club, he leads intermediate and advanced hikes and typically hikes 3–4 days per week. He also enjoys woodworking and creating crafts from trees and plants found along O?ahu trails.
