Introduction to Handmade Books:Sewn Bindings

This in-person, hands-on class is designed to introduce the basic skills needed to create a variety of sewn books. Participants will make one book each week:  Pamphlet Stitch Binding, Japanese Stab Binding, and Butterfly Binding. Participants should plan to bring the basic tools to each class (see below). Details about the papers, which are specific to each book, will be provided one week in advance of each project to allow participants time to gather what is needed.

Notice

Please read:  Required Materials:
"Basic Tools: Pencil and eraser, scissors, Exacto (or Olfa) knife, self-healing cutting mat, ruler with a metal edge, bone folder (or substitute an expired gift card), a small awl (can substitute a push pin), glue stick (UHU brand recommended), and 2 small binder clips.

Sewing Supplies: 4 tapestry needles, 3-ply linen thread (can substitute embroidery thread).

Papers: Plain paper (copy paper, writing paper, or sketch-weight paper), colored card stock, light-weight decorative paper (Washi, Kozo, Chiyogami, or colorful wrapping paper). Project-specific details provided in advance."
