Paradise Lost is generally viewed as the best long poem in the English Language. John Milton is generally rated the 2nd greatest English language poet (the 1st being Shakespeare). The story focuses first on Satan's rebellion against God, and then on Adam and Eve's creation and fall from Paradise (for eating the forbidden apple). The writing is brilliant and raises many questions as Milton tries to "justify the ways of God to men". While there is a religious theme, I am not religious and teach this poem because it is fascinating. We will discuss the themes, focusing often on volunteers reading aloud quotes of the poetry and using Zoom Whiteboards so all can see and discuss the exact wording.
Dave Johnson is a lawyer who began teaching literature part-time about 50 years ago, starting with Shakespeare and later expanding to Homer, Virgil, Dante, and other plays and poetry in English.
Dave enjoys both literature and teaching. He finds Zoom interesting and challenging, appreciates its Whiteboard features, and values the ability to reach students at a distance.
