In recent years, much has been written about a perceived “crisis in masculinity.” Many commentators suggest that men—especially younger men— have been experiencing increased difficulty in defining what it means to be a man.
Many surveys suggest that men to-day, especially younger men, may be struggling with questions regarding their self-identity, their role in society and, especially, their relationships with women.
In this course, we will explore selected articles, books, and possibly films that address these issues. Through guided discussion, we will consider a range of perspectives on masculinity in contemporary society and reflect on the question: What does it mean to be a man today?
Class Structure: This course is designed as a seminar rather than a lecture. Participants will be expected to complete preparatory reading or viewing and come to class ready to engage in thoughtful discussion.
