Espionage, counter-intelligence and deception have played a critical role in world affairs. This course will discuss espionage from World War I and World War II, up to the current period. For example, prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the US intelligence community obtained the detailed invasion plans of Moscow from a human intelligence source in the Kremlin. Special attention will be paid to the espionage operations of the KGB and CIA during the Cold War, as well as Britain's MI5 and MI6.Current Chinese and Russian intelligence operations will also be discussed as well as the counter-intelligence activities of the US intelligence community. Intelligence tradecraft, such as cut-outs, dead drops, sleeper agents, and double and triple agents will also be discussed.
Robert Weiner taught courses on global affairs at the University of Massachusetts/Boston for a number of years, is interested in Kissinger's realist foreign policy as a strategy for building a stable world order, and has very limited experience with intelligence during the Cold War.
